The United Nations is an international organization of sovereign states. As a province of China, Taiwan is not in any sense qualified to join such an organization.
Owing to reasons known to all, the Taiwan authorities illegally occupied China's seat at the United Nations for 22 years. The 26th United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 2758 in October 1971. The resolution proclaims in clear and unmistakable terms: that it recognizes representatives of the government of the People's Republic of China as the only legitimate representatives of China and the People's Republic of China as one of the five permanent members of the Security Council, and that it has decided to resume all rights of the People's Republic of China, recognize representatives of her government as the sole legitimate representatives at organizations of the United Nations and immediately expel representatives of Chiang Kai-shek from seats at organizations of the United Nations and all its subordinate establishments which they have illegally occupied. From then on, the question of China's representation at organizations of the United nations has been thoroughly resolved in political, legal and procedural terms.
It should be pointed out that, over the last few years, the Taiwan authorities have again clamored for Taiwan's "return to the United Nations." Such a move is clearly meant to split China's sovereignty. It will get nowhere in both legal and practical terms. It is doomed to failure.
