| Why must Relations between the two Sides of the Taiwan Straits Develop under the "One China" Principle? |

The Chinese Government maintains that adhering to the "one China" principle is an important basis for the two sides of the Taiwan Straits to develop bilateral relations and gradually proceed to reunification. Before the two sides conduct negotiations on peaceful reunification, they can develop exchanges in all fields under the "one China" principle, alleviate hostility, increase common understanding and enhance mutual trust so that cross-Straits relations progress in a steady and healthy way.
At the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, the Taiwan authorities expressed the opinion that there is one China and that China should be reunified. Under pressure from both inside and outside Taiwan, they have also taken some measures to loosen control on the development of bilateral relations. For example, they have permitted Taiwan compatriots to visit the mainland for family reunion and sight-seeing, conditionally and gradually relaxed control on indirect non-governmental exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits, and authorized the SEF to conduct routine consultations with the ARATS. Such measures have proved beneficial to mutual understanding between the two sides and to progress in bilateral relations.
However, in recent years, the Taiwan leadership has deviated from the "one China" principle by preaching the concepts of the two sides of the Taiwan Straits being "two political entities not subordinate to each other," "two split sides with separate administrations" and "one China, one Taiwan." They are procrastinating the date of establishing direct post and telecommunications services, direct trade and direct air and water transportation, and they are creating barriers to various cross-Straits exchanges. Meanwhile, they are actively purchasing advanced military equipment from overseas to upgrade the degree of military confrontation with the mainland. This cannot but arouse people's grave concern and vigilance.
The development process for relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits over the last decade and more proves that deviation from the "one China" principle will inevitably help ferment the influence of separatist forces and those pursuing "Taiwan independence," harm the fundamental interests of people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, obstruct development of cross-Straits relations and prolong the process of China's reunification.
