That Taiwan is an inalienable part of China is not only a historical fact but has been recognized by the international community.
From 1895 to 1945, Taiwan and Penghu Islands were occupied by Japan. In July 1937 the Chinese people began waging their War of Resistance against Japan. This war was part of the world-wide struggle against fascism and received extensive support from people all over the world. During World War II, China, the United States, the Soviet Union, Great Britain, France and other nations formed an alliance against the Axis of Germany, Japan and Italy. The Cairo Declaration issued by the United States, China and Great Britain on December 1, 1943 states: it is the purpose of the three countries that Japan shall be stripped of all the islands in the Pacific which it has seized or occupied since the beginning of World War I in 1914 and that all the territories Japan has stolen from China, such as Manchuria, Taiwan and Penghu Islands, shall be returned to China. The Potsdam Proclamation signed by China, the United States and Great Britain on July 26,1945 (subsequently acceded to by the Soviet Union) reiterates: "The terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out."
On August 15 of the same year, Japan declared its surrender. The instrument of Japan's surrender states: "Japan hereby accepts provisions in the declaration issued by the heads of the governments of the United States, China and Great Britain on July 26, 1945 at Potsdam, and subsequently acceded to by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics." On October 25th the ceremony for accepting Japan's surrender in Taiwan Province of China war theater of the Allied powers was held in Taipei. On the occasion, the chief officer accepting the Japanese surrender proclaimed on behalf of the Chinese Government that from that day on Taiwan and Penghu Islands had again been incorporated formally into the territory of China and that the territory, people and administration of Taiwan and Penghu had been placed under the sovereignty of China. By then, Taiwan and Penghu had come back under Chinese sovereignty.
In October, 1949 the government of the People's Republic of China was established. It is the sole legal government representing China. The People's Republic has so far established diplomatic relations with 160 countries. On October 25, 1971, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758, which states: "The Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing China in the United Nations, and the People's Republic of China is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council." It also restore "all lawful rights of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations." At the same time, the "representative" of the Taiwan authorities was expelled from the world organization. The United Nations and the whole world have recognized that there is but one China in the world, of which Taiwan is an inalienable part, and that the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing China.
